Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the normal schedule?
    Monday to Thursday:
    10am - 1pm – Painting class
    1pm - 2pm – Lunch break
    2pm - 5pm – Drawing class

    Friday:
    10am - 5pm – Composition day
    1pm - 2pm – Lunch break
  2. Am I graded on my works?
Yes. At the end of each semester, you have an exhibition day when you present all the works you have finished throughout the semester. All your works are graded by the board of professors and the grades are announced to you the same day.
  3. Does the school help me with obtaining an Italian visa?
Yes. After you pay the deposit and your place on the course is confirmed, the Academy provides all the necessary documents for you to apply for the student visa at the Italian embassy in your home country. Upon your arrival to Italy, the Academy will advise you on the next steps in the application process for your temporary Italian residency card.
  4. Are there any scholarships or grants I can apply for?
Yes. There are, although they can only be obtained from outside sources and not from the Russian Academy of Art. The Academy itself doesn’t provide any scholarships or grants, but you may apply for independent funds and associations. As our student you are officially entitled to apply for Art Renewal Centre (ARC) annual competition, since we are registered on their list. You can find information about ARC here: http://www.artrenewal.org/Also, if you find a foundation or association where you would like to apply for a scholarship, the secretary office can produce a recommendation letter for you if you need one.
  5. Does the school help with finding accommodation?
Yes and no. We try to help our students to find suitable accommodation for them in Florence to the best of our abilities. However, we do not guarantee the accommodation services provided, since it always depends on the options available on the market of rooms and apartments in Florence at any given time. If the Academy finds accommodation for the student, there is a one-time service charge that needs to be paid by the student.
  6. What is the average cost of living in Florence?
Living expenses always depend on individual habits and lifestyle. However, roughly speaking, the average cost of life in Florence varies from 350-500 euro when renting a room (per month) and around 400 euros for food and expenses. So, count about 800-900 euro per month.
  7. Does the cost of tuition include materials?
No. The cost of tuition does not include the cost of materials. As a student, you are free to use the facilities of the school, but buying materials such as paints, canvases, paper, boards, etc. is your own responsibility. Your teachers will advise you which materials to buy though. You will be given a list of the paints you will need when you begin your studies.
  8. Is it cheaper to buy materials in my home country or in Florence?
This depends on where are you from. Mostly we recommend to the students to buy their materials here, since Florence is full of art shops and the range on offer is quite wide.
  9. Can I use Italian medical services as a foreigner?
Yes, of course. If you wish to use medical services in Italy, you will need to register at a local clinic to be assigned to a doctor.
  10. What career prospects do I have after I graduate?
Depending on your career preferences, you can choose the path of painter, graphic artist, illustration artist, story board artist for the movie industry or animation, etc. The principles we teach are fundamental and crucial for an artist of any kind, since the most important rules of composition, color perception and the form always remain the same in all fields of visual arts.
  11. Is there a winter semester enrolment?
Yes, there is a winter semester enrolment. However, you will not have a separate study program, but you will simply join the first year students, who have started from September. It is your own responsibility to catch up with the current program rhythm. If you join from the winter semester and are doing a three-year course, you will also be graduating half a year later. The deadline for winter semester applications is the 1st of December and the deadline for tuition payments for the winter semester is the 15th of December.
