Portraiture Painting Limited palette

Students study portraiture from real-life working only with live models. Technique - limited palette.

The students learn how to go from general to specific in learning such a complex form substance as a real head. The course consists of several stages of learning: compositional solution for the canvas, proportions of the big form of the head, character of the model, color content, anatomy analysis of the form, building up the form of the head and working on the details of the face.

Course objectives:

The tasks will become progressively more complex starting from building up a basic form of a  human head and climaxing to conveying the inner psychology of a  person in portrait.

* form of a human head (which implies anatomical knowledge about the form,    perspective of a head, proportions of a head);

In this course we will learn the technique of painting with pastel in classical academic style

Pastel is one of the most difficult and at the same time perhaps the most refined painting technique. This technique is not as easy to master as oil painting because of the peculiarities of paint application and its interaction with the color of the paper.

Course objectives

- Peculiarities of pastel technique, what ways you can achieve this or that effect, what paper is best to use, how to choose its color for specific tasks.

- Basic academic knowledge of painting, drawing and composition, universal for any academic technique, which we will study on the example of still life and portraits.

- For experienced artists, I will explain the subtleties of painting a live model, modeling form with color and handling color touches.

The course is suitable for both beginners and advanced painters.

Schedule: Tuesdays

5:30pm - 7:15pm

Tuition fee per 1 month: 150 euro

Full-time students (enrolled in a program of minimum one year) are entitled to 50 % discount for any workshop or evening course.

In this workshop we will focus on several main directions in which this versatile medium and its many traditional and contemporary techniques can be developed and explored:

  • In working with watercolor stil life one can learn to paint forms and shapes affording one ability to apply it in interior and other forms of design. This skill gives an artist a unique edge for any project presentation.

  • Painting an Acquarello portrait one can learn to express subtle quality of human features. Acqua means water, and we are 60% made of it. So let's see what we can make of it with some pigments and inspiration...

  • Space, air, fog, dew, plant life, soft and incandescent luminescence - all afford this beautiful medium a chance to gently touch paper surface allowing it to remain veiled by the artist's brush and shine through simultaneously. Plein air watercolor is an exploration and adventure, especially when together with you we will attempt to paint the virgin beauty of Italian mornings, afternoons and sunsets.

Course objectives

  • Learning about rules of perspectives, proportions, “clean” color palette and aerial perspective

  • Understanding how to create an effect of lightness, airiness and subtle color transitions

  • Mastering the techniques and methods of water-based pigment application

  • Developing a broader coloristic vision and elaborate implementation of all aspects

The  course is recommended for both beginners and advanced painters, as the professor assists the students both individually and in the group. Academic painting in water color carries a variety of techniques and methods in itself, therefore creates a unique and refined way of depicting beauty around us.
